How Does Google Algorithm Works

How Does Google Algorithm Works

Google has been evolving and revolving its algorithm for the better. All for the users’ happiness and impart the information they seek on the search engine. But what is an algorithm? And why is it that whenever Google announces an update, every webmaster rushes to analyze whether their website’s content aligns with the algorithm or not? Let’s find out.

What is Google Search Algorithm?

All is the game for ranking on search engine result pages (SERPs). The Google algorithm is designed to rank the website’s content according to the user’s search. With around 1.13 billion websites worldwide and 8.5 billion searches conducted every day, it is practically impossible to refine the content for every single search.

But it is Google—a search engine committed to user satisfaction. The search engine has been evolving and updating its algorithm system since its invention, which was 1998. It has made it possible to extract the most relevant result for the user out of those 8.5 billion searches. This is the reason why people prefer Google over Bing and other search engines.

The Algorithm Works in the Following Stages-

Crawling

The crawlers assess the authenticity of a webpage. Internal links, external links, along with updated webpages help the crawlers to find the address of the webpages.

Indexing

After the identification of the addresses of the webpages, Google indexes these URLs (address) to detect what the webpage is about.

Ranking

The ranking is the last stage, where your search query helps the algorithm to analyze which web page matches your search terms.

How Does the Google Algorithm Work? Ranking Factors Determined in the Google Search Algorithm

Google determines some factors to place the content on result pages which is relevant to the search query. Here are these factors:

Search Query:

You need to tell Google what information you seek. Google analyses your search query and presents you with the most relevant searches. Before that, Google’s language models inspect your search query. They inspect the web pages that contain words similar to your search query. Their potential is not limited to the words the users have typed. They also delve into the synonyms of the words and also present you the result having synonyms of your search query.

For example, if you type ‘Digital Marketing benefit,’ the search bots present you with the most relevant and qualified results that can hold the synonym of these search query words like advantages, merits, positive impact, etc. The prime purpose of search engine is to keep you informed.

Relevance:

The words used in a search query are referred to as keywords in content marketing language. Keywords are not the only element that decides the pages’ rank. There are other important things too. Firstly, the relevance of the keyword is examined. The bots check if the keywords appear enough times on the page to know that the page is relevant for the search query. But beware, the bots are smart enough to detect keyword stuffing. Avoid it and add the keywords naturally.

The media of the page is also significant in ranking algorithms. Optimize the pictures and videos by adding the keywords in the description, title tag, and alt tags. Add media as it makes the page visually appealing and easier for the users to skim the page. The bots check the time spent on the page. The more time spent, the more relevant the page will be considered.

If the page is relevant and engages many users, the PageRank will be higher in search results. Google’s algorithm is not designed to analyze the pages with viewpoints or political issues.

Quality:

Content is the forever king. Google wants to give the best result to its users. Hence, keywords and media alone cannot impress it. The prime reason users are searching is to quench their thirst for knowledge. Be it looking for a service or a query, people are seeking answers. Therefore, the search algorithm works to determine the authoritativeness and trustworthiness of the content. Any act of plagiarism, paraphrasing, or, as mentioned, keyword stuffing can cost the webmaster a lower rank or the penalty to be removed from the search engine.

Usability of Web Page:

The algorithm takes into account the technicality of a webpage. Page’s responsiveness on maximum digital devices and screen sizes, page load timing, and the bounce rate of the webpage.

Note: Bounce rate is the percentage of visitors that visits the website and leave without interacting much. A higher bounce rate leaves a negative impact.

Context:

The Google search algorithm works for every single user. HOW? By analyzing the user behavior with its past searches and website interaction. The user adds some details while making an account on Google. Google returns the favor by delivering the best web results to the user. It analyzes your location, past search history, and your search setting, language preferences, and other personalized setting to help the algorithm.

The Google Algorithm Updates
